The project
The requirement
Rolling stock provider Northern Rail, working with Rail Order, needed a durable finish for the front and rear ends of trains — areas that collect traffic film, leaf debris and carbon deposits that bake on in summer and resist standard depot washing.
01 Challenge
What had to be solved
On extensive daily services, train fronts and rears become heavily soiled. Once carbon deposits and traffic film bake on, even strong depot wash facilities struggle to restore a clean finish. Graffiti on these surfaces adds further cleaning cost and downtime.
02 Solution
How the system was applied
After a thorough clean, Urban Hygiene anti-graffiti coating was applied by roller and brush to a fine high-gloss finish on the protected ends. The coating was specified to make future dirt and graffiti easier to remove during routine depot washing rather than requiring specialist intervention.
03 Result
What changed
Months later, depot wash facilities could return the trains to a bright, clean appearance. Traffic film, dirt and graffiti now come away more easily, keeping Northern Rail stock looking maintained between services.
Customer view
It’s a good few months on and the train wash facilities have been able to do their job thanks to the coating — the trains now always look bright and clean.
