Choose a graffiti remover by surface or job

The right graffiti remover depends on how porous the surface is and how old the paint is. On mixed sites, start with Graffiti Remover, an all-purpose graffiti cleaner, and step up to a strong graffiti remover for brick and concrete only where the paint is stubborn or aged. Not sure? Fresh graffiti or old, ghosted graffiti

For fresh tags, start with a standard remover. Graffiti Wipes give fast wipe-off removal of fresh spray paint and marker on smooth surfaces, and the 500 ml graffiti removal spray is the one to keep in the van for everyday graffiti cleaning.

General removers can struggle with aged spray paint. Work very old marks with a green nylon pad soaked in remover. If weathered or layered paint on masonry still won’t shift, switch to Strong Graffiti Remover.

Ghosting is the shadow graffiti can leave in porous masonry once the paint has gone, most commonly on highly porous surfaces such as sandstone. Treat it as a second stage with Graffiti Stain Remover, which lifts and bleaches inks and dyes. It also strips paint, so keep it off paint you want to keep.

How to remove graffiti and rinse safely

  • Patch-test a small, hidden area first.
  • Apply standard removers undiluted, leave them for 3 to 4 minutes and don’t let them dry. Wipe smooth surfaces with a clean damp cloth, and rinse or pressure-wash larger and porous areas.
  • Strong Graffiti Remover and Graffiti Stain Remover are corrosive. Wear alkali-resistant gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing, keep an eye bath to hand, and protect nearby glass, metal, paintwork and plastics.
  • Rinse them thoroughly, ideally with a high-pressure, low-volume washer at 69 bar (1,000 psi). Without high pressure, scrub while hosing at low pressure.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection with liquids and gels, work in a well-ventilated area, and don’t let any product enter drains.

To protect cleaned surfaces from future graffiti, see our anti-graffiti coatings. Graffiti Remover and the spray are designed for routine clean-downs of permanently coated surfaces.

For councils, schools, housing and facilities teams

Urban Hygiene, based in Doncaster, has sold graffiti removal products since 1999. For regular removal programmes, choose the 25 litre Graffiti Remover, a box of 10 sprays so every vehicle can carry a bottle, or a box of 50 wipe pouches with no minimum order.

For professional graffiti removal crews, the core set is Graffiti Remover as an everyday commercial graffiti remover, Strong Graffiti Remover for heavy paint on masonry and Graffiti Stain Remover for shadows. For bulk quantities, or if you would rather have the work done for you, contact our team. For algae and green growth on render, brick and paving, see our exterior cleaning products.

Frequently asked questions

Which graffiti remover should I buy?

Start with Graffiti Remover on mixed surfaces: its datasheet states that it removes graffiti from 100% of non-porous and around 80% of porous surfaces. Add wipes or the spray for small tags, and the strong or stain remover for masonry.

Which graffiti removers are safe on plastics, glass and paint?

Graffiti Remover, the spray and the wipes suit glass, metal and painted or sealed panels. These three and the gel are plastic and polycarbonate safe. Patch-test first. Strong Graffiti Remover and Graffiti Stain Remover are corrosive: never use them on paint, painted finishes, signage, galvanised metal, aluminium, glass or plastics. Use them on brick, stone and concrete only.

How long do I leave graffiti remover on?

Leave Graffiti Remover, the spray and the gel for 3 to 4 minutes (Graffiti Remover needs 5 to 8 minutes on sticker residue). Start Graffiti Stain Remover at around 5 to 10 minutes, and Strong Graffiti Remover with a short dwell, increasing as needed. Don’t let any of them dry.

How much graffiti remover do I need?

Allow 4 to 10 m² per litre, depending on how porous the surface is. That is roughly 2 to 5 m² from a 500 ml spray, 20 to 50 m² from 5 litres, 100 to 250 m² from 25 litres and 80 to 200 m² from the 20 litre gel.

How much do graffiti removal products cost?

Graffiti Wipes are from £4.79 incl. VAT a pouch (minimum 3 when bought on their own), the 500 ml spray from £18.47 incl. VAT, the kit from £47.29 incl. VAT, the 5 litre removers from £98.99 incl. VAT and the 20 litre gel from £343.19 incl. VAT. Next-day delivery is available on orders before 12pm.
